TORONTO -- Toronto Marlies coach Steve Spott felt his team had more than enough opportunity to pick up two points Saturday afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum. Les Dodson Jersey Retro . Torontos power play was held scoreless on three opportunities, including once in overtime, and the Marlies out-shot the Iowa Wild 39-27, but fell 2-1 in a shootout to the visitors. Carson MacMillan and Zack Phillips scored in the shootout to help Iowa snap a five-game skid. It was the Wilds fourth win in 11 games. "I think we had more than enough opportunity to put the game away," said Spott. "Very good players with empty nets and were hitting posts, were not getting pucks up and over (Wild starter, Johan) Gustafsson. "We had some glorious chances, that we didnt put in the back of the net. When you let a team like that -- thats desperate -- hang around, thats what the result is going to be." Toronto dropped to 1-1-0 on their current three-game, three-night stretch and had their three-game win streak snapped. MacMillan faked a slapshot and then beat Marlies starter Garret Sparks in the first round of the shootout. Then Phillips faked a shot, got Sparks moving before beating him glove-side in the third round. Jamie MacQueen scored in regulation for Iowa (26-30-10), while Gustafsson made 38 saves for his 12th win of the season. Peter Holland had the lone goal for Toronto (40-20-6). Sparks made 25 saves in his first loss since Jan. 25. The Marlies couldve had a fourth power-play opportunity, in the third period. Wild forward Brett Bulmer was assessed a roughing minor, but Brandon Kozun retaliated with a careless cross-check and negated the man advantage chance. When asked of Kozuns penalty, Spott responded, "I think he wont play tomorrow." With the win, the Wild earn a split in the season series. The Marlies won the only other meeting between the two teams 4-3 on Jan. 15 in Des Moines, Iowa. Holland tied it 1-1, with his ninth of the season, at 1:12 of the third period by picking up the rebound off of a Kenny Ryan shot and beating Gustafsson stick-side. "Kenny made a nice play, just coming down the right side and threw it off the pad," said Holland of the play. "I was lucky enough to kind of pick up the rebound, pull it across the net and tuck it in the far side." Toronto dropped to 5-12-4 when trailing after 40 minutes this season. MacQueen opened the scoring at 7:37 beating Sparks with a shot from the bottom of the face-off circle for his second of the season. Prior to MacQueens goal, Kris Foucault had a great scoring chance when his shot beat Sparks, but hit the post at 6:00 of the second. Holland had an excellent chance to open the scoring at 16:00 of the first period, but put his shot off the side of the net with Gustafsson out of position. "We missed a couple point-blank opportunities with open nets, putting it out the far side," said Holland agreeing with Spotts assessment. "Either that or hitting the post, a couple bounces go our way, its a different story." Toronto concludes their three-game, three night stretch, when they host the Abbotsford Heat on Sunday. The Marlies need three points to clinch a playoff spot as well as their third consecutive North Division title. Its something the Maple Leafs minor leaguers are focused on. "As we go forward here our job is to win the division and try to catch Grand Rapids for second in the conference and thats still our goal," said Spott. Added Holland: "Thats obviously our main objective here is to clinch as fast as we can. We dont want to take any of the teams we play lightly, but just work on things going into the playoffs. Give guys who dont get a lot of minutes a chance to play more. Its definitely something were focusing on." Notes: Rookie defenceman Eric Knodel made his professional debut replacing Korbinian Holzer for the Marlies. The Maple Leafs recalled forward Jerry DAmigo from the Marlies on Saturday. Marlies goaltender Drew MacIntyre was a healthy scratch as Christopher Gibson backed up Sparks. Spott said Holzer, MacIntyre and captain Trevor Smith were all given the day off to rest bumps and bruises. China Cheap Jerseys . Nothing pretty. But this is 1/4 World Cup. CARMELO ANTHONY: As Knicks fans worry about the potential departure with his decision to opt out, I see this as a blessing in disguise. As currently constructed, the Knicks have NO shot at being a legitimate contender. Yes. The organization gave up a kings ransom to get a major Asset yet when you reflect on his time in NY hes been a terrific scoring talent and theyve had their share of ups and downs and in his defense - not all his fault. He is what he is at this stage of his career -- a brilliant scorer who plays very hard on the offensive end of the court. In the end, sometimes in sports, business and life the best strategy is to cut your losses and move on. With Tyson Chandler, Amare Stoudemire and Andrea Bargnani all off the books next season, it allows president Phil Jackson to shape the organization in his image which is the right move. The key is to avoid all the noise from the NY media with demands to go for Big Name $$ Quick Fixes and make thoughtful basketball decisions. This organization tries too often to Win the Back Page rather than do whats smart. Yes, a terrific talent could walk out the door for little or nothing yet in 12 months you get to truly build the right foundation for long term success. Good common sense. 2. CHICAGO BULLS: Youll hear their name lots in the next 10 days when Melos name comes up and if I were Melo this makes complete sense to me as long as hes willing to take a pay cut that he can earn some back in quality endorsements if hes a significant piece on a major-league winning team in Chicago. Against the Knicks, a quick comparison: Money: NY, ownership: Chicago…. not close, management: Chicago…. Sorry, but Phil Jackson has never been a president/GM, coach: Chicago…. not close, team talent level: Chicago. If Derrick Rose can even get back to being 80 per cent of what he was, this is a nice edge. In my mind, the Bulls make the most sense if -- and its a big IF -- hes willing to sacrifice. Hell be held totally accountable here on a daily basis. No nonsense.. Authentic Cheap Jerseys. nbsp; Defining moment for him in his career. 3. KEVIN LOVE: Where there is smoke …. If Im the TWolves, I move him as soon as I can and get on with the business of reshaping my team while his value is at its highest. Many folks say wait until the trade deadline, yet Im not sure youll get better than the next few weeks. I think you owe it to yourself and your fans to cut the cord as soon as you can. Believe me; if they really want him, theyll blink and offer you close (not all) of what you want. Be proactive. In 12 months, hell be out the door. Deal with it and rid yourself of the drama. Terrific talent, yet hes got you to how many playoff appearances? Sure, the other 14 teammates matter a whole lot in the Western Conference but its time to be realistic and based upon your market build a team rather than the concern with having name guys. 4. ZACH RANDOLPH (Grizzlies): Trying to get an extension worked out in Memphis. Makes perfect sense to me. All the guy does is produce and hes done it in the context of winning/playoffs. A double-double machine who is one of the toughest covers in the league, hes been very good for you. A piece you cant lose. If the term and money make sense, do it. 5. JOEL EMBIID: Feel awful for this young man. Watching him play this year at the University of Kansas hes an intriguing talent with loads of major potential that I love. On the other hand, with some teams freaked out by the injuries to bigs like Sam Bowie and Greg Oden over the years with the complete - and I mean complete - change in the way the NBA game is played on the perimeter it might benefit him to fall a bit to a team that will be patient with him and allow him to work his way in at the right pace as a rookie. Hes got a chance to be very good, yet in a different league that bigs came into 20 years ago. If he drops a bit, someones going to be quite lucky if he holds up physically. Risk vs. Reward. Can change in a very positive way or end some careers with this pick. Will be interesting to watch unfold. ' ' '
DENVER -- The Colorado Avalanche didnt need a shootout to get off to their best start in franchise history. Curtis McClinton Jersey . When they faced one, they were once again successful. Ryan OReilly scored the only goal in the shootout, Semyon Varlamov stopped 35 shots and the Avalanche beat the Minnesota Wild 3-2 on Saturday night. Gabriel Landeskog and Nathan MacKinnon had a goal apiece to help the Avalanche sweep the home-and-home series with the Wild. "It was a good couple games against Minny, they obviously play a pretty tough game," MacKinnon said. "Down low, theyre tough to defend. Its always nice to get on the board a little bit, but obviously getting two wins is huge for us." Colorado and the New York Rangers were the only teams to yet have a game decided in a shootout before Saturday. Despite their lack of experience, the Avalanche came out on top. "(I was) nervous, same as usually," Varlamov said. "Nobody, none of the goalies, nobody likes the shootouts." John Mitchell added two assists for Colorado, which won a rare penalty-free game. "I was a little bit (surprised) considering how much time was spent in the offensive zone," Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said regarding the lack of penalty calls. Mikko Koivu and Matt Cooke scored goals and Josh Harding stopped 23 shots for the Wild. Minnesota has dominated the Avalanche in Colorado since the 2007-08 season. The Wild came into Saturday with a 12-2-2 record since midway through that season, and they had won six of their past seven at Pepsi Center. The Avalanche looked as if they would win comfortably despite Minnesota carrying the play when Cooke spoiled the shutout bid with 3:27 left to make it 2-1. "I think we had five or six grade-A chances in the first period alone and sometimes thats frustrating," Cooke said. "But its up to us to just try to keep each other positive and the fact that were getting those scoring opportunities is a good thing. We just need to stay on it." Harding came off for an extra skater in the final minute, and Koivu beat Varlamov on a slap shot with six seconds left to send the game into overtime. "Nobody wants to give up a goal with 4 seconds left," Varlamov said. "The third period we sat back the last 10 minutes and they started to get more chances around the net and that is why we gave up two goals. It is what it is. We were able to get two points." Neither team could score in the extra period, sending the Avalanche to their first shootout of the season. Despite never having competed in an NHL shootout -- or coaching in one -- coach Patrick Roy didnt hesitate in picking his shooters. He chose the only players to score in one in the teams last practice. "It made it kind of easy," Roy said. Harding made saves on P.A. Parenteau and MacKinnon before OReilly broke through. Jason Pominville couldnt match the goal and Minnesota lost for the second straight night. "I just tried to open up my blade and try to look like I was going to shoot it and kind of put it through," OReilly said. For Minnesota, getting a point after trailing late was some consolation. "Thats a huge point for us. It was great the way we played the game," Yeo said. "We lost the skill competition at the end of the game, the shootout, whatever you want to call it. Bottom line I really believe we deserved the win in regulation." Coming off a tough loss to Colorado in St. Paul on Friday night, Minnesota was looking to get even but Saturdays game started like Fridays ended. Landeskog, who sealed Fridays 3-1 win with an empty-net goal, gave the Avalanche the early lead when his backhand from the side of the net deflected off Harding and into the goal 2:22 into the game. It was his ninth goal of the season. The Wild nearly tied it later in the first when Cookes backhand slipped under Varlamov and lay on the goal line for a moment and the goalie covered it up. It was reviewed and determined the puck never completely crossed the line. Minnesota had another great chance in the second period when Torrey Mitchell got ahead of the defence, took a pass from Cooke and had a breakaway on Varlamov. The goalie stopped the backhander to preserve the one-goal lead. "Some nights you get a hot goalie and we surely did that tonight," Koivu said. Colorado added to the lead later in the second when Marco Scandella turned it over in his own end. Mitchell got the puck to a wide-open MacKinnon, and the rookie beat Harding with a wrister at 12:56 of the period. It was his fifth goal of the season. JOHNS, N.DETROIT -- Ndamukong Suh will be a no-show at the Detroit Lions voluntary minicamp this week. Suh wont be in Allen Park, Mich., on Tuesday with his teammates, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The person, who said Suh will attend the teams voluntary workouts in May and mandatory minicamp next month, spoke Monday night on condition of anonymity because the defensive tackle was not announcing his plans. Detroits first-year coach Jim Caldwell said last week he wished Suh was at previous voluntary workouts. Caldwell added that he has spoken to Suh more than any other player on the team since being hired. The two-time All-Pro has skipped voluntary workouts in the past, and the 6-foot-4, 307-pound Suh has stayed in good shape. He has not missed a game because of an injury in his four-year career. He was suspended for two games in 2011 for stomping on an opponent. Suh is entering the last year of his contract, and is scheduled to count more than $20 million against the salary cap this season. Lions president Tom Lewand has insisted it does not matter when a deal gets done with Suh even though a new contract couuld be restructured in a way that gives the team some short-term flexibility to make more moves this off-season. Tyreek Hill Jersey. Lewand has sounded optimistic an agreement will eventually be reached with Suh, drafted with the No. 2 pick overall in 2010. Caldwell told people at a season ticket holders gathering that Suh is a thoughtful individual, who has his life planned out Detroit defensive co-ordinator Teryl Austin said last week that Suh is "worth every penny," because he can disrupt what offences want to do in the passing and running game. Suh has cost himself some money with his on-field actions, including an infamous stomp on the right arm of Green Bays Evan Dietrich-Smith in a nationally televised game on Thanksgiving in 2011. The NFL was fined seven times for more than $200,000, leading to some in the league saying hes a dirty player. Suh has been able to afford it financially because he signed a five-year contract worth up to $68 million, but his reputation has taken a hit. Suh had a career-high 10 sacks as a rookie and has made 27 1/2 sacks in his career. As a captain last season, he had 5 1/2 sacks. ' ' '
TORONTO - The Toronto Raptors will try to shake off a pair of losses tonight when they host the struggling Detroit Pistons. Davante Adams Jersey . Toronto has dropped games to Indiana and Miami since a five-game winning streak and closed out a three-game road trip at 1-2. In Tuesdays 86-79 loss at Indiana, DeMar DeRozan led the way with 28 points and Patrick Patterson added 20 for the Raptors, who shot 37 percent for the game and received 16 points from Kyle Lowry. "Down the stretch, you cant beat a team like that by trading baskets with them," said Patterson. "You have to get stops and we just couldnt do that." The 79 points were a season low for the Raptors, who managed just 80 in a loss to Chicago on Nov. 15. DeRozan has scored 20 or more points in six of his last seven games. Toronto will open a three-game homestand Wednesday versus Detroit, Brooklyn and Milwaukee, and is 6-8 at Air Canada Centre. Detroit has dropped five in a row and three straight on the road, including Tuesdays 89-85 setback at New York in the opener of the trek. Josh Smith led the Pistons with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Greg Monroe ended with 19 points and Andre Drummond added 12 and 17 rebounds. The Pistons fell to 8-9 on the road, shot 37.2 percent and made just 3-of-19 3-pointers. "It was a very good effort," said Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks. "(We) got down 17 and was able to fight back. Prosecutors charged the 27-year-old Pistorius with murder in Reeva Steenkamps death and say it was with premeditation. They say they will seek a life sentence if Pistorius is convicted, the sternest punishment available in South Africa. South Africa no longer has the death penalty. The intense public interest in the Pistorius trial is shown by the launching Sunday night of a 24-hour cable channel devoted to covering the court case. If convicted on the murder charge, Pistorius could be sent to prison for at least 25 years before the chance of parole, the minimum time someone must serve if given a life sentence in South Africa. He would be older than 50 before he could be released. The state says Pistorius intentionally killed Steenkamp at his home in the pre-dawn hours of Valentines Day last year by shooting her through a toilet door after an argument. Pistorius denies murder and says he killed his girlfriend by mistake when he fired four times through the door thinking there was a dangerous nighttime intruder on the other side. A lesser sentence is possible if Pistorius is found guilty of murder but without premeditation. He also could be convicted of culpable homicide, South Africas version of manslaughter in which someone is killed through negligence. Pistorius claims he was acting in self-defence against what he believed at the time was a threat to his life. As well as murder, Pistorius faces a second charge of illegal possession of ammunition for bullets found at his Pretoria house that he allegedly didnt have proper licensing for. Prosecutors say he also will be indicted Monday with two more gun charges relating to him allegedly shooting in public on two separate occasions before Steenkamps killing. The serving of an updated indictment to Pistorius in court is expected to be the first move at the trial at Pretorias high court. He has not yet been formally served with the papers that include all four charges against him, although his lawyers have had the papers and details of the additional gun charges since llast year, prosecutors say. Iman Marshall Jersey. The gun charges reportedly relate to him allegedly shooting out the sunroof of a car in one incident and another when he allegedly fired a gun inside a restaurant, apparently by mistake. Those incidents happened in the court jurisdiction of the city of Johannesburg, not where Steenkamp was killed in Pretoria, and prosecutors applied to have the two charges included and heard at his murder trial. Female judge Thokozile Masipa will ultimately pronounce the champion runner innocent or guilty and will decide on any sentence. South Africa has no trial by jury. Parts of the trial will be broadcast on live television, both in South Africa and across the world, and hundreds of reporters are expected to descend on North Gauteng High Court in the South African capital for the start of the trial. The 24-hour cable channel devoted solely to the trial will continue until the case is finished. The trial will deal with the bloody killing of a 29-year-old model and law graduate, but also the issue of gun ownership and South Africas problem of violent crime, which Pistorius says was the reason why he kept his licensed 9 mm handgun under his bed. Pistorius says his fear of crime was why he fired four shots through the door, hitting Steenkamp three times — in the head, elbow and hip. Prosecutors maintain he was simply angry with her after an argument. Members of Pistorius family will likely attend the trial, as they did on his previous court hearings. His uncle, Arnold Pistorius, sister Aimee and brother Carl are all also listed as state witnesses. "We love Oscar, and believe in him, and will be standing by him throughout the coming trial," Arnold Pistorius said in a statement over the weekend. For the first time, members of Steenkamps family will also be in the courtroom according to a family statement that her mother June and others would be at the trial. The parents and close relatives of Steenkamp did not attend any of Pistorius previous court appearances. "All we are looking for is closure and to know that our daughter did not suffer on that tragic Valentines Day," Steenkamps parents said in a statement this month and days before the one-year anniversary of the shooting that stunned South Africa. ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Hawks didnt talk about ending their nine-game losing streak against Miami. Michael King Jersey . The Hawks only wanted to make up for the last loss in the streak -- an overtime defeat in Miami last month. Paul Millsap scored 26 points and the Hawks overcame LeBron James 30 to beat the Heat 121-114 on Monday night, leaving Miami to bemoan its defensive woes. "To us, this was a get-back game," said Atlantas Lou Williams, who had 12 points. "We felt we should have won the last one in Miami that we lost in overtime." James blamed poor defence for Miamis fourth loss in its last six games. "We scored enough points to win, so obviously it was defence," James said. "Especially in the first half." The Hawks led 71-70 at halftime. DeMarre Carroll finished with 19 points and Pero Antic had 17 for the Hawks, who beat Miami for the first time since Jan 2, 2012. It was Atlantas first home win over the Heat since Nov. 18, 2009. The Hawks have been rebuilt under second-year general manager Danny Ferry and first-year coach Mike Budenholzer. Most Atlanta players said they had no idea the Hawks had gone so long without beating the Heat. "I never even knew that," Millsap said, adding the Hawks were more motivated by Miamis back-to-back NBA championships. "Anytime you play Miami or any great team, you want to step up and play your best," Millsap said. "I think thats what we did today." Chris Bosh had 21 points for Miami, which was without Dwyane Wade for the second straight game. The Hawks set a season high for points in a half and points allowed by a Miami opponent in a half. The Heat trailed despite matching their season high for points in a half. It was only the second time in Miamis franchise history both teams had at least 70 points in a half. "I cant just pinpoint what it is," James said of the defensive woes. "Its a little bit of everything. At some point weve got to figure it out. Its just not good basketball right now." Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said the defensive problems were "all across the board, A through Z." "There just wasnt a lot of pride on that side of the court tonight," Spoelstra said. "We tried to win it on a shootout and then when our offence came up dry on the road toward the end, a couple missed shots and turnovers, we werent able to secure a win." The Hawks led 57-45 late in the first half and kept a 97-92 advantage entering the final period. Even so, Miami appeared bound for its eighth comeback from double-digit deficits of the season. With a large portion of the Atlanta crowd chanting "Lets go, Heat!" James sank a 3-pointer with 7:06 remaining for a 104-all tie. James made another jumper on Miamis next possession to give the Heat the lead. Carrolls 3-pointer for Atlanta tied it at 107. Miami took its last lead when Mario Chalmers, who had 17 points, made one of two free throws. The Hawks regrouped to lead 112-108 following two free throws by Millsap. The Hawks led 116-111 when a missed layup by Atlantas Shelvin Mack set up James three-point play to cut the lead to two points. Kyle Korver, who had 12 points, answered with a 3-pointer. James had a turnover on a bad pass and a missed 3-pointer on Miamis next two possessions. Wade, who missed his second straight game, said before the game there is "still a little soreness" in his knees. Some players on each team wore purple shoes on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Kings hometown. Both teams and the officials wore "Dream Big" logos on their warm-up shirts. Kings daughter, Bernice King, delivered a brief message before the game. Korver hit a 3-pointer to open the second period, extending to 109 his NBA record of consecutive games with a 3. James was slow to return to his feet after he was hit in the back of his head by Korver, who was trying to block a shot with 3:18 remaining in the first half. Korver was called for a flagrant foul, but the call was overturned following a review. Busch has now won three consecutive Nationwide Series races at Bristol since last March, when he and Larson also went 1-2 to the finish. Of his 16 national wins at Bristol, five are in the Sprint Cup Series, seven are Nationwide and four are in the Truck Series. "I definitely like coming to Bristol, I always have," said Busch, who made his first trip to the .533-mile bullring in 2004 testing with Hendrick Motorsports. "Ive definitely gone through some trials with the Cup cars. First couple times here was a rough go-around for me. Sort of got it figured out, was able to start leading laps, start winning races and thats been the biggest things. Why that is? I dont know. I just enjoy coming to racing. To the banked tracks. It takes guts to go fast." Busch now has 65 career Nationwide Series wins. On Saturday, he and Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Matt Kenseth combined to lead 298 of the 300 laps. He didnt get much of a chance and settled for second. "I just tried to run hard and I know (Larson) was running the top, he loves the top," Busch said. "I knew he was going to be up there. I tried to perfect that a little bit earlier in the race, but it seemed like anybody who was behind me on the restart would be able to jump the two guys that were on the bottom." Harvick was third and Ryan Blaney was fourth. Kenseth was fifth after leading a race-high 178 laps. Busch led four times for 120 laps. "Kenseth, he was really fast," Busch said. "He was lightning fast there much of the day and I was having a hard time catching him. I was just able to bide my time through traffic a little bit better than he did and he got stuck and I passed him." ' ' '
ST. Dallas Stars Store . LOUIS - Tre Mason told St. Louis Rams teammates hed be busting some long gainers.Thats not the first time hes said that, coach Jeff Fisher said.Mason was true to his word this time, breaking free again and again, fueling a highly unexpected laugher with three touchdowns.I told myself to achieve greatness, Mason said after the 52-0 rout over the hapless Oakland Raiders on Sunday. I want to be the best player to ever touch a football.Everything was ridiculously easy for the Rams, who have had their share of struggles. They just kept getting into the end zone.Id have to think awful hard to come up with another game that kind of started off the way that one did, quarterback Shaun Hill said. That was certainly fun.Mason scored two long touchdowns and Hill accounted for three TDs in an out-of-nowhere 38-point first half that tied for second most in franchise history. The final margin was the second most for the Rams, topped only by a 59-0 victory over Atlanta in 1976.The Rams (5-7) had zero hangover from a stinging three-point loss at San Diego last week. Hill was intercepted by Marcus Gilchrist at the goal line in the final minute of that defeat. The Raiders (1-11) took their second-worst defeat in the franchises 54-year history, falling just shy of a 55-0 whipping at the hands of the Houston Oilers in 1961 in the AFL. That was the Raiders second season. It just wasnt us, quarterback Derek Carr said. That didnt look like us. I dont know if flat is the word, but it just wasnt us.In the first half, Mason had 113 yards rushing on six carries with an 89-yard score, plus a 35-yard jaunt on a screen pass that opened the scoring. Hill was 12 for 15 for 178 yards and two TDs and ran for a 2-yard score. The Rams scored touchdowns on their first five possessions, then got a field goal on the sixth midway through the second quarter to top their previous-best scoring total for a game this season. The 38-point halftime lead was the largest in franchise history, one more than against Green Bay in 1980.The Raiders had three extra days of rest after knocking off the Chiefs but were never competitive and committed five turnovers. Carr threw two interceptions leading to the Rams final 10 points before halftime and was benched in the second half. The St. Louis defence was dominant, forcing five turnovers and getting six sacks, three by Robert Quinn. Chris Long played for the first time since the opener and had a sack and fumble recovery. The shutout was the Rams first since 2006, 20-0 at Oakland. The Rams outgained the Raiders 203 yards to 34 in the first quarter. Oakland opened the game with three straight three-and-outs.Raiders interim coach Tony Sparano said players werent sharp in one practice this week, but added, I didnt see this coming. This just got away from us, he added.Trumaine Johnson had two interceptions for St. Louis, returning the second, against Matt Schaub, for a 44-yard score that made it 52-0 in the fourth period. In a show of solidarity for protesters in nearby Ferguson, Mo., five St. Louis players stood with hands up before trotting onto the field during pregame introductions. Fisher said hed not been aware the gesture had been planned. After Mason scored on an 8-yard run in the fourth quarter, he and Britt raised their hands together.Everything about the situation touched me because it could have happened to any of us, said tight end Jared Cook, who joined wide receivers Kenny Britt, Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey and Chris Givens in the pre-game gesture.Any of us are not far from the age of Michael Brown and it happened in our community. I wouldnt want to be in any one of those guys situations that it happened to.Additional security measures at the game included members of the National Guard toting firearms.NOTES: Rams G Rodger Saffold aggravated a nagging left shoulder injury in the second half and did not return, but expects to play next week at Washington. The Raiders voided a free agent deal with Saffold last winter because he failed a physical relating to the shoulder, and he quickly landed back in St. Louis. ... Raiders TE Brian Leonhardt (concussion) was hurt on a kickoff return in the first quarter and did not return. OT Menelik Watson (ankle) was sidelined in the second quarter. Sparano had no updates on either player. ... Fans in the north end zone held letters forming Keep the Rams in St. Louis. Points was disqualified Friday from the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am for using a training device while waiting to play the 18th hole at Pebble Beach.NEW YORK -- A couple of months before Serena Williams capped her dominant run to a third consecutive U.S. Open championship and 18th major singles title Sunday night, she sat down with coach Patrick Mouratoglou to decipher why the season had been such a struggle by her standards. At the time, Williams was coming off a third-round loss at Wimbledon, which followed a second-round loss at the French Open, which followed a fourth-round loss at the Australian Open -- and, when Grand Slam success defines a legacy, that simply wouldnt do. The quest to match Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova at 18 was weighing on her. It was definitely on my shoulders, Williams could acknowledge after that burden was gone. It was definitely like, Oh, get there. Get there. Get there. She knew, of course, there was one more big event left in 2014, and a finite amount of time to turn things around before heading to Flushing Meadows. In some ways starting from scratch, Williams regrouped and stopped her mini-slump, never dropping more than three games in any set, including a 6-3, 6-3 victory over close friend Caroline Wozniacki in Sundays final. When Serena is on her game, said the 10th-seeded Wozniacki, who admitted she was nervous in her second Grand Slam title match, theres not much we can do. Williams matched Everts total of six U.S. Opens and became the first woman to win three in a row since Everts four-title run from 1975-78. Add in Williams five titles apiece at Wimbledon and the Australian Open, plus two at the French Open, and only three players have more Slams: Margaret Court with 24, Steffi Graf with 22, and Helen Wills Moody with 19. Ranked and seeded No. 1, Williams let Wozniacki keep things competitive for about five games but wound up compiling a hard-to-believe 29-4 edge in winners. Until a cross-court backhand in the final game, the only winners registered by Wozniacki came on aces. When it was over, Williams dropped to her back behind the baseline, covering her hands with her face. Her first major trophy also came in New York, in 1999, when she was 17. This time, Williams earned $4 million, a record in tennis -- $3 million for the title, plus a $1 million bonus for having had the best results during the North American summer hard-court circuit. A few weeks shy of her 33rd birthday, making the American the olddest major champion since Navratilova was 33 at Wimbledon in 1990, Williams powered this way and that in her black-and-pink hightops. Andrew Wylie Jersey. . Wozniacki is the one training for the New York City Marathon, but she was tuckered out by the end. Wozniacki may as well have been an extra in this Williams highlight reel. Points were directed by Williams, via serves that reached 120 mph (194 kph), forceful returns that backed Wozniacki into a corner when not producing outright winners, unreachable groundstrokes or the occasional volley. From a different planet, said Wozniackis father, Piotr, who also coaches her. Come on, theres no chance. Yes, this was all about Williams. At times, it felt as if Wozniacki were there because, well, someone needed to be on the opposite side of the net. Theyve been pals for years, and they hung out together in Miami -- heading to the beach, watching an NBA playoff game -- after both lost early at the French Open in May. Wozniacki says Williams helped her get over the end of her engagement to golf star Rory McIlroy. Williams said she planned to invite Wozniacki along for Sunday nights championship celebration. Were both going to do anything possible to win the match, said Wozniacki, a 24-year-old from Denmark who reached No. 1 in the rankings in 2010, a year after losing to Kim Clijsters in the U.S. Open final. After the match, were friends again. Mouratoglou noted the obvious: It didnt matter one bit to Williams who she was facing. Yeah, theyre friends, the coach said, but on the other side, believe me, Serena has zero friends. The last time she was at a major, Williams followed her early Wimbledon singles exit with an odd episode in doubles, appearing disoriented and quitting after three games because of what she called a bug. After Wimbledon, I was just so disappointed, Williams said. I also realized I just needed to relax a little more. I put a lot of pressure on myself. I dont have to put pressure on myself. When she met with Mouratoglou after Wimbledon to discuss how to proceed, he recalled Sunday, She coached me. She told me, Look, you are a guy who likes challenges. I am so low. You should be motivated by that. Since that chat in Paris, Williams has won 19 of 20 matches and three titles. Only one number mattered to her Sunday night, though: 18. ' ' '

TORONTO -- CFL president Michael Copeland says the ongoing labour dispute between the league and its players could prevent the regular season from starting on time. The 2014 campaign is scheduled to open June 26. But the league and CFL Players Association are at an impasse and a potential players strike threatens the season starting as planned. "Of course theres concern (about regular season starting as scheduled)," Copeland, who is also the leagues COO, said Monday. "I dont think we could be at this point in training camp and not be concerned. "But at the same time Id say Im hopeful because I believe in the strength of our offer. I think when the players have some more time with it, theyll realize its good for them to. Im hoping that can be basis of an agreement." CFLPA president Scott Flory didnt return two telephone messages Monday. The two sides havent met since Thursday. Copeland said no new talks were scheduled as of Monday afternoon. However, according to TSN, the CFLPA tabled a new four-year offer late Monday that was rejected by the league. The proposal reduced its salary cap demand from $5.8 million to $5.2 million, TSN said. The players also reportedly amended their revenue protection clause where it would have the right to renegotiate the cap in league revenues increased by $12 million in the third year of the deal. The players increased that figure to $18 million, according to TSN. The CFL and players met for more than 17 hours over two days last week. Both the union and the league tabled offers that were rejected by the other side. Training camps opened as scheduled Sunday but a players strike remains a strong possibility. Strike ballots have already been sent out but due to Alberta labour laws, the players wont be able to strike en masse until next week. Copeland said the league would welcome the resumption of talks as long as the "best and final offer" the CFL presented last week was the basis for discussion. "As we said to the executive, were certainly not closed to talking but it has to be talk thats within the parameters of the proposed agreement that we put on the table," Copeland said. &"By all means, if the PA executive wants to dig into that a little bit deeper, wants clarification of certain aspects of it, wants to make suggestions based on the framework of that offer then were open to listening to them. Air Max 270 React Just Do It. ." In its most recent proposal, the players association called for a $5.8-million salary cap increasing three per cent annually with a $4.8-million minimum. That was down from its original demand of a $6.24-million ceiling and $5.84-million floor. Last year, the CFL operated with a $4.4-million cap. The union also wants a $15,000 ratification bonus for veterans and just one weekly padded practice during the season while maintaining its original position on pre-season and playoff compensation as well as pensions. It would like the elimination of the option year from CFL contracts, except for new players, and independent neurologists on the sidelines during games. The leagues offer calls for a $5-million salary cap (up from $4.8 million) and boosts the average player salary to $96,000 (up from $92,917 in its original offer). It also calls for ratification bonuses of $5,000 for veterans and $1,500 for rookies. The CFL contends the players salary cap proposal excludes benefits, pensions, pre-season and post-season monies as well as ratification bonuses. If those are included, the league argues, the cap would be well more than $6 million in the first year and result in six of the nine teams losing money. The CFLPA has also amended its stance on revenue sharing. Instead of wanting specific percentages of gross revenues, sponsorships and gate money, the players proposed allowing for a fixed cap for at least two years. After the second, if league revenues increased by more than $12 million -- excluding the Grey Cup -- the two sides would renegotiate the cap or the CBA would be terminated at seasons end. Under the leagues proposal, the salary cap would be renegotiated if its revenues increased by $27 million or more in the third year of the deal. "We want to get a deal done, we want to be in camp without this being a topic of conversation," said Copeland. "We want to focus on football." ' ' '
ST. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif Super Bowl Jersey . PAUL, Minn. -- The freefalling Minnesota Wild left their coach speechless on Sunday night. It wasnt for a good reason. Kyle Okposo scored twice midway through the third period, and the New York Islanders overcame a three-goal deficit to beat the Wild 5-4 on Sunday night. John Tavares, Cal Clutterbuck and Thomas Hickey also scored for the Islanders, who won for the third time in eight games. Tavares rejoined the lineup one night after sitting out a home game against New Jersey because of an undisclosed lower-body injury. Ryan Suter, Jonas Brodin, Nino Niederreiter and Justin Fontaine had goals for the Wild, who have lost five straight and eight of 11. "It was there for us. Thats the disturbing part," Wild coach Mike Yeo said. "Its hard to find the words for this because this is beyond disturbing right now. "We have to find a way to win that game. Youre up 3-0 and youre at home. Theres no excuses." Coming off a winless four-game road trip in which they were outscored 19-8, the Wild fell to 15-4-2 at home. They had won 10 of 12 there and 14 of 17. Minnesota has home games during the upcoming week against St. Louis, Buffalo and Washington. At the seasons halfway point, Minnesota is tied for ninth place in the Western Conference with Dallas. Four of their next six games are against top-eight teams in the conference. "You just need to win. Thats the only way you come out of this," Wild captain Mikko Koivu said. "The only way you can win in this league is to play a good 60-minute game. Were going to analyze it (Monday) and find a way." The Islanders didnt play a complete game, either, but they were good enough. "We just kept chipping away and kept chipping away," Okposo said. "We were down 3-0, and kind of regrouped. We decided to go after them and start moving our feet. "For the first 22 minutes we werent doing that, so we decided to get pucks deep and go to the net." Okposos second goal capped a wild 2-minute span in which the Islanders took the lead, lost it, and regained it. Okposo, who played 1 1-2 seasons at the University of Minnesota, scored the winner with 5:48 to play when he raced in from the left wall and put in a rebound after Thomas Vanek was stopped by Josh Harding. The goal came 27 seconds after Fontaine lifted a rebound over New York goalie Kevin Poulin to tie it 4-4. Okposo had given the Islanders a 4-3 lead 92 seconds earlier when his slap shot beat Harding low on the glove side. With the Islanders trailing 3-0 midway through the second period, Tavares took a shot from the right edge of the crease that hit Koivus skate. The New York captain reached in and poked the puck across the line. Clutterbuck, traded for Niederreiter on June 30, tipped in a shot from Hickey late in the period to get the Islanders within one goal. Hickey tied it at 6:30 of the third, cutting across the crease to tip a pass from Colin McDonald high into the Wild net. "Weve had our struggles, and theyre a good hockey team, theyre going to get through it," said Islanders coach Jack Capuano, whose team lost 10 straight from Nov. 19 to Dec. 9. "We didnt talk anything about what theyve done or their record. We just wanted to keep applying the pressure to them." Harding returned after missing four games to adjust his medications for multiple sclerosis, but the Wild played their third straight game without their best offensive player. Zach Parise was placed on the injured list on Saturday because of a bruised foot. Even without Parise, Minnesota had the games first eight shots, the last of which gave the Wild a 1-0 lead early in the first period when Suters wrist shot on a rebound beat Poulin. It was Suters first goal in 51 games. Brodin and Niederreiter scored in the first 3 minutes of the second period for a 3-0 lead. Poulin got a piece of a wrist shot from Brodin after the defenceman took a pass from Koivu, but the puck trickled across the line at 39 seconds. The assist was the 300th of Koivus career. He added No. 301 at 2:59 when Niederreiter -- the Islanders top pick in the 2010 draft -- beat Poulin from in front. "The first half of the game I thought we looked great, and then the execution the second half of the game," Yeo said. "Theres a lot thats between the ears right now that we have to fix." NEW YORK -- The New York Rangers escaped with two points they believed they deserved even though they gave up a goal they felt the Toronto Maple Leafs didnt earn. Wholesale Air Force 1 China . Mats Zuccarello and Derek Stepan scored shootout goals, and backup goalie Cam Talbot earned his second win in two nights as the Rangers shook off a late tying tally and beat the Maple Leafs 2-1 Monday night. The game was forced into overtime because of Nazem Kadris goal with 1:24 left in regulation -- one the Rangers thought shouldnt have counted. After a wraparound attempt, David Clarkson took two whacks at the puck at the right post, and Talbot appeared to cover it, but Kadri came in and poked it in under Talbots pad. The NHL reviewed it in Toronto and said the goal should stand. "In my opinion, that was the wrong call," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "The referee told Brad (Richards) on the ice that if they didnt score on the wraparound, then it wasnt a goal. They didnt score on the wraparound. "The puck was underneath Cams pad. How (the reviewers) saw it differently, Im not quite sure. Youve just got to play through those things, and thats what we did." The Rangers held off the Maple Leafs in a spirited overtime that produced several scoring chances and then outlasted them in the shootout. Zuccarello and Stepan scored in the first two rounds, and Talbot stopped Kadri in the third to end it. Joffrey Lupul was the only Toronto player to score in the tiebreaker. Talbot was relieved the Rangers pulled out the victory. "I would have been pretty devastated, especially with the game we played," he said. "We deserved to win the game, and to get a goal like that against us could have really hurt us, but we kind of let it go, pushed forward and got the eventual game-winner." Jonathan Bernier was exceptional for Toronto, making 42 saves through overtime and allowing only J.T. Millers goal 7:04 into the third period. The Maple Leafs played their third straight shootout and lost for the second consecutive time. They are 2-5-2 in their last nine. "We played a very solid road game," Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf said. "It was very good to get a point." Talbot, starting over slumping No. 1 netminder Henrik Lundqvist for the second straight game, bounced back from the late goal and improved to 8-2 in his first NHL season. He made 24 saves Sunday in a 4-1 win over Minnesota and helped New York finish its team-record, nine-game homestand 3-4-2. He nearly earned his third shutout in 12 career NHL games, all this season. The Rangers next play on Friday at Washington. Who will start in goal then for New York remains to be seen. "It is safe to say that were leaving for the holidays on a much happier note," Vigneault said. "Its going to be a pleasant three days. "My parents are 81 and 79. I havent been home for Christmas with my girls for eight years, so I am looking forward to that." Miller, recalled from Hartford (AHL) on Thursday, scored his second of the season when he came off the bench, streaked down the slot, and took a crisp pass from Chris Kreider from behind the net. Toronto nearly grabbed the lead just over four minutes into the third when Nikolai Kulemin was stopped in front and then had another drive hit the right post, slide along the goal line, and stay out. The no-goal call was confirmed by video review. Bernier kept the Maple Leafs in it, especially during the second period when the Rangers had a 22-5 edge in shots. New York was dominant again in the middle frame one night after a 17-5 advantage against Minnesota when the Rangers scored twice. "I dont think we played our best game, but we hung in there," Bernier said. "We stole a point probably." Bernier got the starting nod from coach Randy Carlyle two nights after he replaced James Reimer, who was pulled against Detroit after giving up three goals on 12 shots in the first period. Bernier made 25 saves in relief, but Toronto was beaten in a shootout. "Our goaltender stood on his head. Thats all you can ask in a game like this one," Carlyle said. MONTREAL -- It was all about energy as the youthful New York Islanders skated rings around the Montreal Canadiens. Robbie Gould Super Bowl Jersey . Ryan Strome and Brock Nelson scored power-play goals late in the second period and Evgeni Nabokov made 19 saves for the shutout as the Islanders downed the listless Canadiens 2-0 on Thursday night. "We outworked them," said the Islanders Matt Martin. "They played (Wednesday) night and we were a little fresher than them and we had some young legs in the lineup. "We tracked hard." The loss, combined with Tampa Bays 4-2 win over Philadelphia, compromised the Canadiens (45-28-8) chances of starting the playoffs on home ice. Montreal is second in the Atlantic Division with 98 points and one game left to play while the Lightning has 97 points with two games left in the regular season. The Canadiens will need to win their final regular season game Saturday night at home against the New York Rangers and hope the Lightning lose either Friday night against Columbus or Sunday against Washington. "You want home ice, you want to go into the playoffs feeling good about your game, and weve got Saturday night to do that," said Montreal captain Brian Gionta. The Canadiens felt anything but good about their play against the Islanders (32-37-11), who posted their first regulation time win in four games but improved to 7-2-2 in their last 11. Nabokov got his fourth shutout of the season. "Its no fun losing at this time, but sometimes, youre just not good enough," said Thomas Vanek, who was traded to Montreal by the Islanders last month. "You have to give them credit, and at the same time, we sucked. "The coaches prepared us and -- I dont know if it was tired legs or we were mentally not there or both, but overall they kept skating hard and putting pressure on us and we didnt have a push back." The Canadiens also got the bad news that second line winger Alex Galchenyk, who appeared to injure his right knee in Wednesdays 3-2 overtime loss in Chicago, will miss the first round of playoffs with a lower body injury. Montreal came out flat and never got any momentum as they were outshot 30-19. New York held a 9-2 shot advantage early in the opening period but couldnt beat Carey Price, even when the Montreal goaltender wandered halfway up the left boards and then misplayed the puck. But Canadiens defenceman Douglas Murray, who returned from a three game suspension, was ejected at 10:52 of the second period for a check from behind on Johan Sundstrom. The Islanders rookie turned around just as the Canadiens defenceman hit him at the side of the net into the end boards. Sundstrom was injured and was taken to hospital. New York coach Jack Capuano said Sundstrom would likely be kept in hospital for observation and not travel with the team back to New York. "It was a tough one," said Capuano. "(Murray) is not that type of player. "Its one hed probably like to have back. Hopefully our guy will be all right." The Islanders used the ensuing power play to open the scoring, as Strome put a shot past Price through a Casey Cizikas screen from the right circle at 15:07. With Vanek off for high-sticking, Nelson whipped a shot under the cross bar from close range at 19:40. Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said only Prices solid goaltending kept the score close. "It was bad performance fro our team," said Therrien. "Every aspect of our game wasnt sharp." Murray drew his first career suspension for an elbow to the head of Tampa Bays Michael Kostka on April 1. TORONTO, Ontario (CP) -- Nazem Kadri will be at Toronto Maple Leafs training camp after all. Billy Turner Super Bowl Jersey . Kadri signed a two-year, US$5.8-million deal on the eve of the start of camp, ending contentious contract talks between the restricted free agent centre and the team. "Happy to be with the leafs for the next couple years, looking forward to camp," said Kadri from his verified Twitter account adding the hashtags ".leafnation .bestnation." Kadri enjoyed a stellar 2013, putting up 18 goals and 26 assists in 48 games during his first full NHL season. The 22-year-old seemed to think that production was enough to earn a long-term contract from the Maple Leafs. Instead, Kadri and Toronto agreed to a so-called "bridge" deal that gives him another two years to prove his value. "Congrats to @43--Kadri on the new contract," Maple Leafs enforcer Frazer McLaren tweeted. "Thanks for dinner." Montreal Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban missed the start of last season while trying to get a longer deal but eventually settled for two years and $5.75 million. Subban won the Norris Trophy as a 24-year-old. Kadris cap hit of $2.9 million will be higher than Subbans $2.875 million. In 99 career games, Kadri has 26 goals and 37 assists. He was the No. 7 pick of the Maple Leafs in the 2009 draft after playing for the London Knights and Kitchener Rangers of the OHL. Signing Kadri leaves one major question for the Maple Leafs: the status of restricted-free-agent defenceman Cody Franson, who remained unsigned as of Tuesday night. The 26-year-old Franson enjoyed a career year in 2013 with four goals and 25 assists. The Maple Leafs have roughly $2 million under the salary cap. Training camp begins Wednesday morning. PASADENA, Calif. Kenny Clark Super Bowl Jersey . -- Manchester United made an impressive debut under coach Louis van Gaal on Wednesday night, with Wayne Rooney scoring twice late in the first half of a 7-0 victory over the LA Galaxy. Ashley Young and unsung defender Reece James scored two second-half goals apiece as United opened its summer tour with a surprisingly polished win over MLS overmatched Galaxy in the Guinness International Champions Cup. Danny Welbeck scored the first goal for Van Gaal, who has had limited work with his new club after leading the Netherlands to a third-place finish at the World Cup earlier this month. United still outclassed the Galaxy in the meeting of David Beckhams two former clubs. Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera also made their United debuts at the historic Rose Bowl. Van Gaals tenure got off to a start reflecting the confidence of Uniteds veteran coach, who intends to return the 20-time English champions to immediate international prominence after David Moyes poor tenure. United finished seventh in Moyes only season as Alex Fergusons replacement after 26 years, failing even to qualify for Europa League play. Van Gaal is still adjusting to his new job after spending the summer with the Dutch team, but he is already planning to spend more time around Old Trafford next summer. Van Gaal spoke out against lucrative preseason tours this week, saying the lengthy U.S. stay hinders his preparations for the season. Van Gaal might not like the summer tour, but United got it off to a sparkling start with goals from likely and unlikely sources. Rooney wasnt Uniteds captain, ceding the job to Darren Fletcher, but the England star easily handled his scoring chances. James wasnt even listed on Uniteds 25-man roster, but the 20-year-old defender provided two outstanding finishes against the Galaxys ragged defence. Herrera, the Spanish midfielder acquired from Athletic Bilbao last month, also looked sharp early. United scored its first goal under Van Gaal when Juan Mata set up Welbeck in the 13th minute for a low 25-yard shot off Jaime Penedos post. After A.J. De La Garza was whistled for a handball in the 42nd minute, Rooney easily buried the penalty even though Penedo guessed correctly. Four minutes later, Welbecks centring pass went through the legs of Galaxy defender Tommy Meyer, who crumpled to the ground as Rooney walked the gift into Penedos net. James put a sharp side-footed finish on a pass from Young for Uniteds fourth goal in the 62nd minute. He then scored from distance on a deflection in the 82nd minute before Young capitalized on defensive blunders for two late goals. The Rose Bowl was largely full for the late-starting friendly, with United supporters easily outnumbering the home teams fans. Thousands of Mexican fans in the announced crowd of 86,432 likely showed up hoping to see embattled striker Javier Hernandez, but Chicharito stayed on Uniteds bench. Even at a friendly, several fans exchanged shoves and yells outside the venerable stadiums southwest gate before security intervened. United on Saturday night and boost the Unions playoff hopes. Nick DeLeon scored in the 36th minute for United (3-23-6), which had ample opportunities to build on its lead but went its 10th straight match without a victory. The Union (12-10-10) are tied with Montreal and Chicago for fourth place in the Eastern Conference on 46 points, with the top five teams advancing to the playoffs. The New England Revolution lurk one point behind. McInerney scored his first goal since June 1 on a clear header from inside the 6-yard box after reaching Klebersons cross from the left. The 21-year-old celebrated his team-leading 11th goal by stripping his shirt and racing toward a boisterouus section of Union fans tucked under RFK Stadiums upper deck. Bart Starr Super Bowl Jersey. The goal came after United missed several chances to close the game out, the most notable coming just several minutes before when goalkeeper Zac MacMath streaked out of his goal but lost a foot race to Uniteds Conor Doyle. Doyle found Chris Pontius in the middle of the penalty area with MacMath still stranded, but Pontius shot well high. DeLeon scored his second goal of the season on a swerving strike from 30 yards after reaching Lewis Neals pass from deeper in midfield. With space around him, DeLeon took three touches before unleashing a vicious shot that gave MacMath little chance. Philadelphias Sebastien Le Toux left the match in the 16th minute after apparently re-aggravating a foot injury. ' ' '
The Rangers force Game Six and the Wild even the score; notes on Zuccarello, St. Myron Pryor Jersey Retro . Louis, Cooke, Toews and more. RANGERS ROCK PENGUINS Facing elimination, the New York Rangers invaded Pittsburgh, earned a first-period lead and never let the Penguins back into it, winning 5-1 in Game Five, forcing Game Six back in Manhattan. Derick Brassard and Mats Zuccarello each had three points for the Rangers, while LW Chris Kreider and D Ryan McDonagh each contributed a goal and an assist. Brassard, who was a point-per-game player for the Rangers in a dozen playoff games last year, now has six points (3 G, 3 A) in 12 playoff games this season, while Zuccarello is up to eight points (3 G, 5 A). Zuccarello also had the best possession stats for the Rangers, with 16 shot attempts for and seven against. The Blueshirts had 69.6% of the attempts with Zuccarello on the ice and 48.6% when he was off the ice. This was only Kreiders second game of the playoffs, and he was effective on a line with Derek Stepan and Rick Nash. Both Kreider and Brassard tied for the Rangers team lead with six hits. McDonagh, who only had one assist in 11 playoff games prior to Game Four, had a goal and an assist, with both points coming on the previously beleaguered Rangers power play. After scoring two goals on three attempts with the man advantage, maybe the Rangers are ready to leave that PP slump in the rearview mirror. After getting annihilated by Pittsburghs Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in Game Four, the Rangers (led by McDonagh and Dan Girardi) were much more effective against that duo in Game Five. While Malkin scored a goal, Crosby was on for 13 shot attempts for and 18 against. The inspirational story for the Rangers was veteran RW Martin St. Louis, playing a day after his mother died suddenly. St. Louis didnt have his best game, but the Rangers rallied around him and G Henrik Lundqvist stopped 31 of 32 Pittsburgh shots to keep the series going. The Penguins line of James Neal, Jussi Jokinen and Brandon Sutter didnt fare too well in the possession game. Neal, in particular, was on the ice for 28.6% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts when he was on the ice, while the Penguins had 54.0% of the shot attempts with Neal off the ice. In a must-win game, the Rangers played with an urgency that they havent shown in this series and are rewarded with a home date for Game Six. Theyre not out of the woods, by any means, but deserve credit for a big road win. WILD AT HEART The Minnesota Wild dominated play against the Chicago Blackhawks and won Game Four by a 4-2 score, evening the series at two games apiece. Wild defencemen Jared Spurgeon and Ryan Suter each had two points. Spurgeon, who had a goal and an assist, now has five points in the playoffs. Suter is up to seven. Wild LW Matt Cooke returned to the lineup, after serving a seven-game suspension and replaced Matt Moulson, who is out with a lower-body injury. Cooke was an impact player for Minnesota, playing a physical game (a game-high five hits), and chipping in an assist on the first goal of the game. He set the tone. Wild forwards Mikael Granlund, Erik Haula and Jason Pominville were all on for better than 70% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts, while Blackhawks RW Ben Smith had a game to forget, on for zero 5-on-5 shot attempts and 13 against. Smith spent the first half of the game on a line with Jonathan Toews, who was on for seven attempts for and 21 against, his 25% Corsi% was his lowest of the year. Toews faced the Wilds top defence pair, Suter and Jonas Brodin, for most of the night. Blackhawks RW Marian Hossa had two assists and D Brent Seabrook had one; they are tied for Chicagos playoff scoring lead with 10 points. Neither goaltender, Chicagos Corey Crawford or Minnesotas Ilya Bryzgalov, looked sharp, but with the Wild controlling play, they had more opportunities to take advantage against Crawford. In front of a rowdy home crowd, the Wild continued their winning ways, now 5-0 at home in the postseason. If theyre going to pull off the upset, though, they are going to need to win at least one in Chicago. Bradley Beal caught Andre Millers inbounds pass near the rim with 0.8 seconds left and put the ball through the rim in time to give the Wizards a 91-89 win over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night. The play came after Victor Oladipo missed a jumper for the Magic at the other end with a chance to go ahead. It followed Washingtons 133-132 win over the Boston Celtics on Monday in double-overtime. John Wall scored the last 10 Wizards points in that one and had 21 with 11 assists against the Magic, helping Washington to its sixth win in seven games. Oladipo scored 17 to lead the Magic but couldnt stay close enough to Beal on the final play of the game. Tobias Harris added 15 points for Orlando, which returned home after a 3-3 road trip that ended with back-to-back wins over Utah and Sacramento. Harris scored to give the Magic an 89-84 lead with 1:38 remaining, their last points of the game. Beal touched the ball only for a split-second at the end of the lob, directing it through the rim for the win. The Wizards moved to 3-0 against the Magic this season -- all single-digit wins. Lovejoy had scored just five goals in his 170-game NHL career, and he had just one goal in 40 games this season before firing two slap shots past Ilya Bryzgalov 2:43 apart late in the first period. With perfect setups from Saku Koivu and Cam Fowler, Lovejoy tied the club record for the most goals scored by a defenceman in one period. "It has to be perfectly in my wheelhouse, and those guys were able to find it," Lovejoy said. "Its a very small sweet spot." After scoring the fastest two goals by a defenceman in franchise history, Lovejoy thought about the serendipity: His wife, Avery, and their new daughter, Lila, were at home watching for the first time since Lila was born on New Years Eve. "We may have to keep pumping them out if I can keep scoring two goals a night," Lovejoy said with a grin. Kyle Palmieri, Tim Jackman and Andrew Cogliano also scored for the Ducks, who improved to 16-0-2 at home this season and remained one point behind Chicago for the overall NHL lead. After giving up two early goals on broken plays, Hiller extended his franchise-record winning streak as the Ducks followed up their 11-1-1 December with their sixth consecutive win over the Oilers, who havent beaten Anaheim since April 2012. Even with little offensive help from superstars Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, who have combined for just one goal in the last five games, the Ducks keep steamrolling along. "They werent going as good as they normally do, and when theyre not going, you need people to pick up the slack," Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. "You get help from everywhere. Thats why I think were a pretty good team." The Ducks have the NHLs second-longest points streak at home to open a season in the last quarter-century, trailing only San Joses 20-0-2 start five years ago. Anaheim also won despite another awful effort by its power play, which went 0 for 8. The Ducks have just one man-advantage goal in the last 10 games, yet still rank third in the NHL in total goals. Boyd Gordon and Nail Yakupov scored in Edmontons fourth straight loss. Bryzgalov stopped 32 shots for the Oilers, who have lost 10 of 12 and are stuck at the bottom of the Western Conference. "We have been hanging around in games, but we always seem to find a way to blow a lead," Gordon said. "We cant sit around and hang our heads. We have to find a way to get the job done." The Oilers took the lead on their opening shift when Gordon flung a shot at the Ducks goal while getting checked facedown into the ice, and the puck deflected off Hillers stick 35 seconds in. Just 11 seconds later, Palmieri jumped on a turnover in the Edmonton crease and beat Bryzgalov. Edmonton capitalized on a mistake by Getzlaf, the Ducks captain, later in the period, with Yakupov getting goals in consecutive games for the first time all season. Lovejoy answered with his two goals, and Anaheim never trailed again. "Their second and third goals were almost identical," Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins said. "Same guy, same place. ... I thought we had pretty good coverage. We had five guys below the puck, but we were just a split-second late getting there." Jackman put the Ducks up 4-2 late in the second period, converting a pass from Nick Bonino in front. The workmanlike forward hadnt scored since joining Anaheim from Calgary in late November. Edmonton managed just eight shots in the final two periods. NOTES: Edmonton D Brad Hunt made his NHL debut, but the Oilers played without high-scoring RW Jordan Eberle, who apparently injured his knee a night earlier in San Jose. Henry Burris completed 22-of-36 pass attempts for 333 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats dumped the reeling Winnipeg Blue Bombers 37-18. The victory put the Ticats on a two-game winning streak with a 3-4 record, while the Bombers continued to tumble downhill with a 1-6 record and five-game losing streak. "We were able to play with confidence and have the trust to know that each guy is going to be where he needs to be and all I need to do is make the reads and the guys are making the plays," said Burris. The loss came a week after Bombers brass made changes it hoped would shake up the team in a good way when team president and chief executive officer Garth Buchko and general manager Joe Mack were fired last Friday. That was followed by a switch at starting quarterback to CFL rookie Max Hall, the signing of kicker Sandro DeAngelis and the hiring of former Hamilton head coach Marcel Bellefeuille as an offensive consultant. "Extremely disappointing," Bombers head coach Tim Burke said of the performance in front of 32,409 fans in their new $200-million Investors Group Field, where they remain winless. "I expected us to come out and play extremely well. I think we played with good effort, I thought our guys played hard, but we didnt execute and we certainly had way too many penalties." Winnipeg had 16 penalties for 137 yards, while Hamilton was flagged 13 times for 101 yards. Hamiltons offence also had the execution and creativity the Bombers lacked. Rookie fullback John Delahunt caught a one-yard pass from backup QB Dan LeFevour and Onrea Jones hauled in a 25-yard pass over his shoulder from Burris. LeFevour punched in for a one-yard TD run and running back C.J. Gable took a direct snap and ran 15 yards into the end zone after Hall was intercepted. Congi made field goals from 41, 46 and 27 yards and went wide left on a 37-yard attempt. "Were really playinng hard and were getting better as a football team," Austin said. Garrett Celek Super Bowl Jersey. Hall did record his first touchdown in his CFL debut when he threw a six-yard pass to Rory Kohlert in the second quarter. Bomber linebacker Ian Wild returned a fumble 54 yards for a late TD, DeAngelis made his one and only field-goal attempt for his new team and connected on an 18-yarder and Mike Renaud had a punt single. Hall completed 18-of-30 pass attempts for 241 yards with the one TD and two interceptions, while Bomber slotback Terrence Edwards led all receivers with eight catches for 172 yards. Hamilton led 10-0 after the first quarter, 17-7 at halftime and 24-7 after the third quarter. "I thought we made good halftime adjustments," Hall said. "I thought we had good conversation at halftime. "I think we may have pressed a little bit being down, maybe tried to force a few things, which happens when youre down. So I think thats what kind of caused some of the bad things that happened in the second half." Penalties helped both teams in their early touchdown drives. After a pair of Greg Ellingson catches of 14 and 23 yards in their first series of the game, the Ticats moved down the field, but only came away with Congis 41-yard field goal at 3:35. A Bomber penalty led to Delahunt catching his second career TD. Winnipeg defensive back Alex Suber was flagged for tripping Ellingson in the end zone, setting the ball on Winnipegs one-yard line. LeFevour then stepped back and lobbed the ball to a wide-open Delahunt. The eight-play, 101-yard scoring drive -- including a 42-yard catch by Gable -- stretched Hamiltons lead to 10-0 at 10:29. Winnipeg had what appeared to be a 96-yard punt return for a TD by rookie Aaron Woods wiped out 23 seconds into the second quarter after Bombers fifth-year linebacker James Green was called for offside and seven-year cornerback Jovon Johnson was flagged for illegal participation. The Bombers rebounded and marched 103 yards down field for Kohlerts six-yard TD catch in the corner of the end zone. ' ' '
OAKLAND, Calif. Ronnie Lott Super Bowl Jersey . -- Less than two months into his career, Jose Abreu is already the guy the Chicago White Sox want at the plate when the game is on the line. Abreu hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, and the White Sox snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. "We realize what he is and how important he is to us," manager Robin Ventura said. "When you get in situations like that youre pretty glad hes up there. Thats what he means to us. You always feel like youre in a good spot if hes up there with guys on." Gordon Beckham homered on the first pitch of the game for the White Sox, who rallied against Oaklands bullpen to end a seven-game losing streak at the Coliseum. John Jaso and Josh Donaldson hit solo homers off Andre Rienzo for the Athletics, who were in line for a season-best seventh straight victory before the bullpen meltdown in the eighth cost Tommy Milone a chance at a win. Beckham and Conor Gillaspie started the rally with one-out singles against Fernando Abad (0-1), and Abreu greeted Luke Gregerson with a no-doubt drive to left field for his 15th home run of the season. "He has ridiculous power," Gillaspie said. "When he gets the ball up in the air like that its going to be tough for it not to leave. Hats off to him. The guy made a mistake and he took advantage of it." Abreu, a rookie slugger from Cuba, is the fourth player in major league history to hit 15 homers in his first 42 games, joining Wally Berger, Kevin Maas and Wally Joyner. "I got the opportunity to hit a good pitch," Abreu said through an interpreter. "All I was doing was trying to hit a ball in the air to bring the guy from third base. But I was able to get a good swing and a good pitch to hit." Gregerson was trying to make Abreu chase a pitch out of the strike zone but caught too much of the plate instead. "You try to make him fish, which he definitely does," Gregerson said. "I dont think it was really a bad pitch. It was just something he was ready for. He was looking for it. Weve been doing it to him the whole series, pound him in. It just stayed up a little too much. Any other day it could be a ground out to third base, we get a double play." Ronald Belisario (2-3) got four outs for the win and Matt Lindstrom pitched the ninth for his sixth save in nine chances. Milone was in danger of losing his spot in the rotation before pitching eight scoreless innings against Washington last Friday. He followed that up with another strong performance, allowing one run and five hits in six innings. But he ended up with a no-decision because of Chicagos late rally. The bullpen has been the one spotty area so far for the As, with eight of the teams 16 losses being credited to the relievers. The teams traded leadoff home runs, with Beckham going deep for his second career leadoff homer and Jaso answering with a drive on a 2-0 pitch from Rienzo for his third. Oakland went ahead when Donaldson led off the fourth with his ninth homer, a day after get his first day off of the season. But those were the only hits the As could manage in 6 1-3 innings against Rienzo. Milone got some help from his defence in the fifth. A perfectly executed relay from Yoenis Cespedes to Eric Sogard to Derek Norris caught Beckham trying to score from first on Gillaspies two-out double off the left-field wall. NOTES: The last time both teams led off the game with homers was Aug. 13, 2013, when Seattles Brad Miller and Tampa Bays Ben Zobrist did it. ... Boyes game-winning goal hit the left post before going off goaltender Jhonas Enroth and into the goal to give Florida a 2-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night. "Finally luck shifted a bit," Boyes said with a grin. Boyes also scored in regulation, while Tim Thomas made 23 saves and was perfect in the shootout for Florida, which won on the road for the first time since Dec. 19. The winner meant extra for Boyes against his former teammate Enroth. "Being here and going against him in practice a lot, he was showing me glove," Boyes said. "He was kinda waving it to me like he was onto me and he knows where I go. I have trouble with guys that I played with so it was nice to get it on him. I like that one." The Panthers carried much of the play, outshooting Buffalo 35-24, but the sound of puck on metal was on a loop. Tomas Fleischmann hit the goal post twice in the third period, and Drew Shore also put one off the pipe in the frame. "It wouldve been nice if a few posts counted as a goal," said defenceman Brian Campbell. "If you hit eight posts, maybe you get a goal or something." Jamie McBain scored for Buffalo, whose new general manager Tim Murray got a closeup view of the tough rebuilding job ahead of him and special adviser Craig Patrick, introduced earlier Thursday by team President Pat LaFontaine. The Sabres squandered a 1-0 lead and wasted a strong performance from Enroth, who was named to the Swedish Olympic team on Tuesday. "I wanted to go out there and show everybody that I earned it," Enroth said. Enroth is 1-9-3 this season, but the Sabres have scored just 17 goals in his starts and been shut out thrice. He couldnt explain the lack of goal support. "Im running out of answers on those questions," Enroth said. The loss ended a five-game home win streak for Buffalo, who is still 6-0-2 in its last eight at First Niagara Center. Florida started the game well, with eight shots on Enroth in the first 4:35 of play. Thomas then stopped a one-timer from Brayden McNabb about five minutes into the game. Buffalo had the games first power play after an interference call against Ed Jovanovski, and Thomas made a sprawling save on Jamie McBain to keep the game scoreless. "They got some great chances, some great looks," said Florida head coach Peter Horachek. "Timmy was rock solid, he kept us in the game." After play was whistled dead because of a scrum in Floridas crease, John Scott tossed the puck in the net and received a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Enroth saved a shot by Alexander Barkov on thee ensuing power play and made 13 saves in the period as Buffalo was outshot by five. Matt Breida Super Bowl Jersey. Buffalo broke through in the second period when McBain streaked into the slot to collect Steve Otts pass and fired low past Thomas right pad at the 5:13 mark. Brian Flynn had a breakaway moments later but Thomas smothered the shot to keep the deficit 1-0. Buffalo had trouble finding momentum despite the lead and killing off an abbreviated 5-on-3 penalty. "Usually when you kill a big penalty kill, you get some momentum, but I don t know," Enroth said. "Its tough to win with this team." Florida nearly equalized at the start of the third period, as Fleischmann had the puck in front of Enroth and used a deft move to get the goalie moving but backhanded the puck off the post. The Panthers finally beat Enroth at the 8:16 mark, after a weak clearance attempt by Alexander Sulzer. Enroth was slow to get up and Tom Gilbert took a slap shot that Boyes, an ex-Sabre, deflected into the goal. Florida had another Boyes goal disallowed when play was blown dead due to an injury to defenceman Dmitry Kulikov in the Panthers zone. Kulikov was bleeding after being struck in the face with a high stick. "Ultimately, Boyes goal in the period should have counted or there should have been a four-minute penalty, one or the other," Horachek said. "But thats the way it goes. " Thomas made a sliding stop on Brian Flynn in overtime. Jonathan Huberdeau appeared to put the Panthers in front during the shootout, but was ruled to have pushed Enroths pad across the line. Campbell played in his 800th career NHL game. His first 391 came with Buffalo, which drafted him in the 6th round of the 1997 NHL Draft. "You want to have longevity in this game and it all started here so its nice to be back here," Campbell said. The 34-year-old defenceman said its weird to see the Sabres with a new general manager, but is hopeful for the teams fan base. "Hopefully Pat LaFontaine can steer them in the right direction," Campbell said. "Im sure he will. Hopefully its good things ahead for the fans. They deserve it. Its been tough sledding. I know we were good in 05 and 06 and got her going but the Bills have struggled a little bit, too. They deserve a lot more for all the support they give."
